Festivals and Events in Char Dham

Some Major festivals celebrated in the complexes of these Char Dhams are:

Festivals in Kedarnath and Badrinath:

Vinayak Chaturthi:
The Vinayak, or Ganesh Chaturthi, is celebrated magnificently in the whole town of Kedarnath. Devotees participate in the Yatra which rounds around the main premise and the confluence near Saraswati river. Moreover, the temple dedicated to Lord Ganesha, built at the entrance of Kedarnath temple, is also worshipped.

Shravani Annakoot Mela:
This fair is being held on the day before Raksha Bandhan when the doors of the temple remain open for the devotees throughout the night. The Shivlinga is offered with jangora, rice, koni, and such grains. And, the next day, it ends with a great Bhandara.

Samadhi Pooja:
Before the temple closes for six months of winter, this pooja is performed on the first day of Kartik (month in Hinduism). And, hence this samadhi Puja is called Special for the Kedarnath Dham.

Mata Murti ka Mela:
This mela is organised in Badrinath every year on the occasion of Shravan Dwadashi or Vaman Dwadashi. It is celebrated with great significance and reverence by the devotees.

Festivals in Gangotri and Yamunotri:

Akshay Tritiya:
On this special day, the Temple reopens for the devotees after being closed in winter. The locals and the other members of the Temple embellish the entire complex and celebrate this day with full devotion towards the Goddess. The special Puja is also performed in the Sanctum of the temple by the priests.

Ganga Dussehra:
During May or June, Ganga Dussehra is held in the Gangotri Dham. With utter faith and reverence, the devotees come here to seek the Darshans of the Goddess in large numbers. They also illuminate Diyas filled with ghee and offer them to the sacred river. It seems mesmerising to watch the river with millions of Diyas flowing over it.

Phool Dei:
This special festival is referred to as a harvesting celebration that is locally much known in Uttarakhand in the Spring season. It falls on the first day of the Chaitra mantra.

Olgia:
The festival epitomes the local culture of the region and is also known as Ghee Sankranti. Locals put ghee on their heads and consume it as well.
