Neelkanth Mahadev Story:

Now we come to the most interesting part of the blog.

Story Background

The story about this temple is mentioned in the Puranas. It’s said that long ago when Samudra Manthan was performed, the Devtas and Rakshashas were keenly indulged in the scenario. Various types of precious materials came out of the ocean in that manthan. But everybody was shocked when a poison called Kaalkoot emerged and it was so poisonous that it could destroy the whole earth.

Why is Mahadeva called Neelkanth?

At that time, the Lord Shiva, who is always known for his kindness and sacrifices, came into the picture and he just drank the boiling poison to save Earth from its dangerous consequences. The Purana script says that the poison got frozen in the throat of Lord Shiva. It means the Mahadeva didn’t swallow it beyond the throat. Now the throat of Mahadeva got turned into a blue colour because of the extreme poisonous reactions. This is why Lord Shiva is known as Neelkanth Mahadeva. Neelkanth refers to the blue throat of God.

Why this place got the name Neelkanth Mahadeva

Now the time is ripe to understand the religious Significance of this place. Let’s continue our story, so when Lord Shiva drank the poison, he started suffering from immense heat and high body temperature. This is why God was searching for a cold and peaceful place to stay so that it could reduce his heat suffering. At that time, lord Shiva found this specific place on the Madhumati and Pankaj river prayag, from where the Nar and Narayan ranges were also visible. Then, Shiv ji stayed there and meditated for approximately 60,000 years in the same place below the panchpani tree. This is the story behind this temple and this is why pilgrims from all over the country came here to offer their prayers.
