During the 6 months from Diwali to Akshay Tritiya, the temple remains closed because of extreme climatic conditions.
In those 6 months, the worship of Lord Shiva is done from Ukhimath.

The Pandavas of Dwapar Yug had performed a big Yagna to free themselves from the sin of War consequences in this place Gangotri.
Mukhba Village is the place where Goddess Ganga is worshipped during the season when the temple remains closed.
Valley of Flowers is a world heritage site designated by UNESCO.
According to the Hindu tales, the Valley of Flowers is the same valley, from where Lord Hanuman had got Sanjeevni Booti for the younger brother of Lord Ram.
The Valley of Flowers is famous as the Heaven of Uttarakhand.
To reach there, one has to trek along beautiful trails.
Along with a variety of bright flowers, the Valley is home to many wild animals.
A king of Tehri Garhwal, Maharaj Pratap Shah had built the Yamunotri temple.
There’s a hot water Kund beside the Yamunotri temple named as Surya Kund. This Kund has hot water springs. And so the people cook rice and potatoes in that hot water spring and consume it as Prasad.
Yamunotri temple has a Divya Shila, which is considered important to worship while entering the temple.
Kharsali Village is the place where Goddess Yamuna is worshipped during those 6 months when the main temple is closed.
