Kedarnath:
In the Garhwal region of Uttarakhand state, Kedarnath temple is highly elevated at a peak of 3,583 m. It is one of the 12 Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva across the nation as is greatly voyaged by the devotees despite being a perilous and tough journey. People say it’s their deep-dyed trust and devotion towards God that leads them there.
The legend has it, that the sacred sanctum was built by the renowned Hindu saint and philosopher, Adi Sankacharya. However, related to its origin it’s been said that when the Pandavas came to find Shiva, seeking redemption for causing death to the Brahmans, the God disguised himself as a Bull to avoid them. When the Pandavas realized who the bull was, Shiva went underground and reappeared as a hump in Kedarnath.
The interesting fact related to it is that all the mantras are always chanted in the Kannada language in the temple.
Haridwar:
Haridwar or “The Nagri of Shiv” which is also regarded as a gateway to the Himalayas is a religious city, rich in ancient and mythological temples as well as Ashrams. Among the four cities hosting the Kumbh Mela festival, Haridwar witnesses it every 12 years according to Hindu Astrology.
The city is the main point from where the most pious river, the Ganga starts flowing, and hence it allures a huge crowd throughout the year to rinse off any evil deeds and sins made by them by taking dips into the Ganga.
As the dawn sets in, the most popular Ganga Arti as a spiritual performance begins in the Har Ki Pauri i.e., the feet of Lord Vishnu. and the point where Ganga enters the plain. It is believed that Vishnu ji himself visited this place in the antiquated times of the Vedic era.
Joshimath:
One of the four monasteries often called Math, set up by the Hindu philosopher Adi Shankaracharya, Joshimath is the first northern state religious hub for various temples and holy sites. In Jyotirmath or Joshimath there is a tree called Kalpavriksha which is believed to be 1200 years old still standing just the same. The major attractions of the town comprise a temple devoted to Lord Narasimha which is an incarnation of God Vishnu, temples of other deities such as Ganesha, Naudevi as well as Surya temple.
Being elevated at a height of 1,875m Joshimath is also regarded as a hill station, visited by many adventure seekers and nature lovers. Many treks to various Himalayan peaks commence from here and activities like camping, and skiing also operate here in Joshimath. So besides being the spiritual center, Joshimath is also a renowned gateway for several treks and voyages and one of the popular treks that begin here is Valley of Flowers which is hardly 26 km away.
Badrinath:
Allocated at a high elevation of 3,100m, the Badrinath or Badrinarayan temple is one of the 108 Divya Desams and out of Four Hinduism’s most revered pilgrimages, Badrinath can be considered as the Northern start point.
The shrine is the abode of Lord Vishnu and millions of devotees carrying eternal faith in the deity climb up here every year regardless of extreme weather conditions or difficulties in the Himalayan region. Among the many other significant idols, the Badrinarayan is believed to be a self-manifested statue, made up of Shaligram stone.
Regarding the establishment of the temple, it is widely supposed to have been constructed by Adi Shankaracharya when he located the idol of the God in the Alaknanda River and then placed it in a cave by the side of Tapt Kund. The interesting fact linked with the Badrinath temple is that it’s located in the North but the priest (Rawal) to performs all the rituals and prayers is traditionally chosen from Kerala, a south Indian state.
Guptkashi:
Nestled between tall, giant, and snow-covered mountains this Hamlet is considered one of the holy expeditions in Hinduism. We also find its mention and confirmation in various ancient religious texts. In addition to its theological significance, Guptkashi has many scenic beauties and natural wonders that make it stand out as a charming destination.
The real appeal of the town is its abundance of Magnolia flowers, known as Champak in the local language. At the start of the summer, the flowers bloom and fill the whole environment with their fragrances and tranquil energy. In Guptkashi there exists a kund named Manikarnika that is a major attraction where the streams of river Ganga and river Yamuna meet.
Guptkashi is the land where God Shiva hid himself underground to avoid meeting with the Pandavas who sought his forgiveness for killing mankind in the Kurukshetra war and came to find redemption under his refugee.
