Day 1: Beginning from Dehradun to Barkot +

Dehradun to Barkot: 140 km(4 hours 40 mins)

Start your journey to the holy Char Dham from the lush valleys of Dehradun, known as the Capital city of Uttarakhand and administrative centre.
If you are from another city or nearby town, reach Dehradun which is easily accessible by road, railway or air flights. Our driver will pick you from Dehradun and take you to the hotel in Barkot. The green Barkot, nestled in Garhwal Himalayas, offers views of tall mountains and green meadows during the road trip. When you arrive at your hotel in Barkot, check in and relax in your room. You will be served a hot meal and also, you can take a city walk if you wish. After wandering, come back to your room and take a good sleep for the following day's tour to the first dham.

Day 2: 1st Dham: Yamunotri and Back to Barkot +

Barkot to Yamunotri: 45.6 km (1 hour 36 min)

On day 2, we will be leaving Barkot for Yamunotri Dham to seek Yamuna Maiya darshan, after finishing your breakfast. The first destination of Char Dham Yatra, you will be driven through the Himalayan foothills to the Jankichatti, the trek base for Yamunotri(6 km). When you arrive at Jankichatti, you either have to trek or you can use services like pony, pithus and palki to reach Yamuna Temple. After the 6 km moderate level trek along the Yamuna River, you will see the Divya Shila and the temple. Do darshan and pray to Maa Yamuna. Also, there is a holy kund or hot water spring near the temple where you can bathe and space for cooking rice or potato to be eaten as prasad. When darshan is completed, trek back to Jankichatti. The driver will pick you from there and drop you back to your hotel in Barkot. Relax, have your meal and sleep well. Following day, we have to travel to our next destination.

Day 3: Driving from Barkot to Uttarkashi +

Barkot to Uttarkashi: 82 km (more than 2 hours)

After staying overnight in Barkot, you will be leaving for Uttarkashi, next pilgrim stop for Gangotri Dham. Finish your breakfast and pack your bags, then the driver will drive you to Uttarkashi, also known as North Kashi. Driving through the lush meadows, drive will drop you at your hotel in Uttarkashi. Check into your room and relax. Savour your food and if you wish you can pay obeisance at the Vishwanath Temple, Shakti temple and Kuteti Devi Mandir. Take a city tour and come back to your hotel for dinner and a sound sleep to fuel yourself for next morning.

Day 4: 2nd Dham: Gangotri and Return to Uttarkashi +

Uttarkashi to Gangotri: 97.6 km (approximately 3 hours)

It's the fifth day of your journey, after morning refreshment you will be going to Gangotri Dham, the second pilgrimage site of the Char Dham Yatra. Driving through the verdant nature and the mesmerising Harsil Valley you will be reaching to the Gangotri Dham, situated on the banks of Bhagirathi River. From this place, the River Ganga originates from the Gaumukh Glacier. After three hours, you will reach the dham, however, you will be dropped 0.5 km from the temple as vehicles are prohibited because of narrow lanes. For senior citizens, wheelchair services are available to the temple to be hired at Rs. 200-500. You can also walk to the temple if you are able to. When you reach you can see the temple of Ganga Mata. If there is a normal crowd you can get VIP darshan, otherwise you have to get in line of devotees. After darshan of Ganga Temple and other adjoining shrines, you can go to the puja counter for personal special puja by local purohits by paying nominal fees. After darshan, shopping at local stalls, food, and touring the dham, you can go back to the entry place where our driver has dropped you. The driver will pick you from the spot and will halt for sometime at Harsil Valley where you can experience nature’s beauty and take photographs.
At the end of the day, you will be dropped at a hotel in Uttarkashi, where you will have your meal and sound sleep.

Day 5: Uttarkashi to Guptkashi +

Uttarkashi to Guptkashi: 185 km (approximately 6 hours)

When you have eaten your breakfast, the driver will drop you to the next stop, Guptkashi. This city is a pilgrim stop for Kedarnath Yatra. Guptkashi gots its name from a legendary event when Lord Shiv where Shiva took the form of a bull and hid at this place to avoid Pandavas who were seeking forgiveness after the Kurukshetra war. Driver will drop you at your accommodation in Guptkashi, check into your room and relax. You can have your meal and also, take a tour of the city. After exploring ancient temples and the marketplace, go back to your hotel room and stay overnight. You must have plenty of rest for the Kedarnath trek, which is a moderate level trek.

Day 6: Third Dham: Guptkashi to Kedarnath +

Guptkashi to Kedarnath: 30 km+16 km trek (8 hours)

On Day 6, after breakfast, early in the morning(4 am), we will travel from Guptkashi to Kedarnath Yatra, one of the 12 Jyotirlingas and Panch Kedar. Carry your backpack and be ready for the 16 km trek that lasts for 6-8 hours approximately. You will leave for Sonprayag, which passes through holy confluences like rudraprayag, devprayag and karnaprayag. From Sonprayag you have to travel to Gaurikund by jeep, the trek base for Kedarnath Wildlife Sanctuary. Begin your trek to Kedarnath Dham passing through alpine mountains along the Mandakini river. In Gaurikund, services like ponies, palkis and pithus are available for old people. You have to hire this service on your own and start your trek.
Other option available is helicopter service from Phata or Guptkashi to Kedarnath helipad which is 0.5 km from the temple. The helicopter journey will take around 20-40 minutes.
When you arrive at Kedarnath, you can seek darshan of divya shivalinga which is said to be the hump of Shiva’s bull form. Seek blessings of sacred jyotirlinga and you can ask for special puja from the priests like Shivling abhishek. You have to stay overnight at the dham as trekking is not permissible after 5 pm in Kedarnath Wildlife Sanctuary. You can get a room for a night stay at a cheap rate. Get yourself indulge in the spiritual vibes of this sacred place and enjoy the beauty of nature where Lord Shiva resides in every element of the surroundings. Explore local stalls, eat local savouries, visit the banks of Mandakini river and attend the evening aarti of Lord Kedarnath.

Day 7: Kedarnath to Guptkashi +

Distance between Kedarnath & Guptkashi: 30 km+16 km trek (8 hours)

On day 8, after morning aarti and darshan of Baba Kedar, you have to leave the Kedarnath Dham for Guptkashi. You must trek back to the same route to Gaurikund trek base. After the trek when you arrive at Gaurikund, go to Sonprayag through the jeeps available. The driver will be waiting at the spot where the jeep will leave you. The driver will take you to a route that passes through the holy confluences like Rudraprayag, Karnaprayag and Devprayag. Our driver can stop for sometime at your wish and you can seek darshan of the holy confluences. Also, you’ll be passing through Srinagar(Uttarakhand) city where you can stop for a few minutes and have a snack break. When you arrive at your accommodation in Guptkashi, have your meal, relax and sleep for the tour to the last pilgrim stop, Joshimath.

Day 8: Guptkashi to Joshimath +

Guptkashi to Joshimath: 154 km (4-5 hours)

After finishing your breakfast we will leave for Joshimath for the last dham, Badrinath darshan. The tranquil town established by Hindu Theologian, Sri Adi Shankaracharya, has many religious institutions, and math(dedicated to holy text Atharva Veda). Departing from Guptkashi you will be driven to the alpine mountains where Joshimath is perched in Chamoli district. You will arrive at your accommodation in Joshimath, after 5 hours of driving. Relax, have your meal and relax after a tiring drive. In your free time you can walk on nearby streets or discover math and temples such as Narsingh Temple which is the winter seat for Badrinath. Return to your room and sleep for next day's visit to the last dham.

Day 9: 4th Dham: Badrinath Dham and Return to Joshimath +

Joshimath to Badrinath: 41 km (2 hours)

On the 9th day of the tour, be ready to travel from Joshimath for Badrinath Dham, the last pilgrimage of Char Dham. Badrinarayan also called Vishnu is present in the meditated form. The Dham got its name from Badri trees, a type of wildberry in this region. You will go after having your breakfast early in the morning. The driver will take you to a 2 -hours route straight to Badrinath Dham through hilly terrain. The majestic temple of Badrinarayan can be seen on arrival, with Nagara style architecture. It is a ritual to take a holy bath at Tapt Kund (hot spring) and then seek darshan of Badrinarayan in the temple. When you are done with the darshan, take a town tour, explore local markets and also visit Mana village 8 minutes away from the temple. After spending your day in Badrinath, the driver will drop you back to your hotel at Joshimath. We have approached the tour ends as we have sought darshan of all four dhams. Rest in your hotel room in Joshimath, enjoy your meal and if you wish you can walk through Joshimath.

Day 10: Joshimath to Dehradun +

Joshimath to Dehradun: 288 km (7 hours 22 mins)

Finally, we have completed our Char Dham Yatra and it's time to return to Dehradun where we have started our journey. Taking back all the pleasant memories and spiritual experiences we will depart from Joshimath. Driving through alpine mountains and meadows, the scenic route of 7 hours allows you to take small breaks for tea or snacks and pictures of panoramic views. On arriving at Dehradun, we completed our tour.

Best Way to Travel from Dehradun to Char Dham Yatra

Dehradun is well connected with roads and acts a beginning point for various pilgrimages and religious sites in Dehradun. However, inter-state travelling does not require railway connectivity, especially if we are travelling to higher altitudes. If travelling from other city to Dehradun: 

  • For instance, if you are from Delhi, reach Dehradun by state bus or travelling car.

Char Dham By Road+Trek

Starting road trip from Dehradun, the popular route for Char Dham Yatra goes from:

Dehradun→Barkot→Yamunotri Dham→Uttarkashi→Gangotri Dham→Guptkashi→Kedarnath→Badrinath→Dehradun  

It approximately takes 10 to 11 days for completing Char dham Yatra by road and trek.

  • In Yamunotri, you have to trek 6 km which is moderate level trek through steep ascents and take 2-3 hours duration.
  • In Gangotri, the trek of 0.5 km is there which might take 15-30 minutes.
  • In Kedarnath, the 16 km trek has moderate to difficult levels which take approximately 8 hours.
  • In Badrinath, there is no trek.

Services like Palki(palanquin), pithus, and mules/ponies are there for senior citizens  and people who have physical constraints. Otherwise, you can opt for helicopter services to skip the trek part.

  • Mandua(Ragi) Ki Roti is a chapati, flatbread or tortilla made with Ragi or finger millet, often served with cooked vegetables or chutney.
  • Chainsoo is a lentil made of whole urad dal or black urad dal with the tadka of cumin seeds, garlic, red chillies, coriander, bay leaf, kalonji and Pahari spices.
  • Kumaoni Raita is a fusion of spices, cucumber, mustard seeds, turmeric and tadka in mustard oil spilled over fresh curd.
  • Phaanu is made from gahat ki dal, a soaked horse-gram lentil mixed with Pahari spices, and eaten with rice.
  • Jakhya Aloo is a special type of potato dish that is tempered with the Jakhya seeds with the mixing of tamarind(imli), tomatoes and pinch of lemon taste.
  • Bhang Ki Chutney is a liquid jam made of dry bhang leaves, hemp seeds, green chillies, coriander and spices.
  • Kumaoni Bhatt ki Churkani is a dish made with soyabeans blended with curd and tomatoes giving it a tangy flavour.

Uttarakhandi Sweets 

  • Bal Mithai is a chocolate-fudge-like sweet made with roasted Khoya(made with milk) in brown colour and covered with white poppy seeds.
  • Singori is a Kumaon sweet dish similar to Kalakhand, made with Khoya and wrapped with Maalu leaf.
  • Jhangora Ki Kheer is a sweet dessert made with Jhangora(bajra or barnyard millet), milk and dry nuts like almonds, cashew nuts, and raisins.
  • Arsa is a traditional Pahari dish made with rice flour and then cooked in mustard oil. 
  • Gulgule is a special snack made from jaggery water and wheat flour kneaded with it. Then it is fried in oil and also is given as offerings to the deities.
  • Pahadi Cookie Roat is a healthy cookie made with wheat, semolina or suji and jaggery cooked in desi ghee. It is used as offering to the deities, especially Baba Balaknath Ji as prasad and paina as gift for sasural by the bridal.
