Architecture of Char Dham Temples

Kedarnath Temple Architecture:

In the mountainous region of Uttarakhand, the prominent temple of Lord Shiva is built in the Rekha-Shikhara style. To be precise, the Kedarnath temple has been incorporated with a solid base, which is joined by Iron rods. On the outside walls, multiple intricate carvings have also been done. The exterior of the shrine reflects a dark granite colour. And the overall structure is split into 3 sections. Inside the temple, a conical shape of Lingam is worshipped which is believed to be self-existing. And it’s believed that this Conical Shaped sacred Shivling is actually a bull hump in which form Lord Shiva has been for some time.

Badrinath Temple Architecture:

The Badrinath temple is built in North Indian style with paintings and intricate carvings on the pillars and the walls of the shrine. This Badrinath Temple of Lord Vishnu, reflecting specially the Garhwali Architecture, is partitioned into three parts.

The Sanctum Sanctorum (worship Hall), then the Darshan Mandapa, where all the rituals are performed, and for the devotees, the Sabha Mandapa. Just above the Garbha Griha, there is a multi-layered roof. And in the above of the final roof, there are 3 Golden Kalash shaped embellishments placed in a proper pattern. Majorly the white, red, yellow and blue are the paints that have adorned the entire exterior walls of the temple.

If you will observe deeply, then you will find the important signs of Hinduism like Om and Swastika carved in the designs of temples. Beside the temple, a water kund is also present, which is called Tapt kund. And the devotees first take a bath in this and then go for the Darshan of Lord Badri Vishal.

Gangotri Temple Architecture:

The architecture of the Gangotri Temple is based on the Nagara Style, and the outside walls are embellished with snow white Marble. The interior of the temple is divided into two parts, Garbagriha and Sabhagriha. With its five Shikhars, the Gangotri shrine faces towards the east where the sun’s rays fall first. Moreover, the overall structure of the temple is similar to the ones in the Katyuri kingdoms. The pure white colour of the outer walls of the temple plays a great role in making it beautiful.
Overall, the Gangotri Temple looks full of peace and tranquillity, and it depicts the nature of Goddess Ganga.

Yamunotri Temple Architecture

The Yamunotri Temple is designed in two cultures, the Local Garhwali style and the Tibetan Style. It consists of a slope-like roof and is constructed by the stones of Black Granite. It includes two main halls which are Garbagriha and a Mandapa. Like the other temples, Garbhgriha is for the main idol of the temple and the Mandapa is for the devotees’ gatherings.
If we look at the temple, the yellow and red colours will be the most dominating and radiate the energised and bright vibrations.
