Chaar Dhaam Yatra Introduction:
Just as many of us have heard our parents express their desire of how they want to go to the Char Dham Yatra for once in their lifetime, they will wash away their sins and get Moksha, but did anyone ever try to find the actual reason behind their holy desire?
Most of us have no clear idea why one must visit these holy pilgrimage sites. But worry not; we will tell you all about the history of the Char Dham and the spiritual significance of this Yatra, and finally, why everyone must go on the Char Dham Yatra once in their lives.
The History Behind Char Dham Yatra
The history of the Char Dham Yatra is very old and can be dated back to the 8th century when the famous reformer and scholar Adi Shankaracharya created the holy Char Dham Yatra, which translates to ‘four abodes of Gods.
Adi Shankaracharya was a prominent Hindu philosopher and saint who played a significant role in making people aware of the beliefs and practices of Hinduism or Sanatana Dharam.
He initiated the concept of the Char Dham Yatra to promote travels to four sacred sites, now known as the Char Dham. They are:
- Badrinath is the first stop on the Char Dham Yatra, a sacred place dedicated to Lord Vishnu. According to Sanatana Dharam, it is believed to be where Lord Vishnu meditated and did Tapasya to find salvation/Moksha. The main divinity at Badrinath is a holy black stone statue of Lord Vishnu in a meditative pose.
- The Jagannath Temple in Puri, Odisha, is a significant site in the Char Dham Yatra. The temple is dedicated to Lord Jagannath, a form of Lord Vishnu and his siblings, Lord Balabhadra and Goddess Subhadra. In the state of Lord Jagannath, Lord Vishnu is thought to eat at the temple.
This belief is one reason why the temple kitchen is known for its “Mahaprasad,” which is believed to be blessed by the Lord.
- Dwarka, As the third Dham on the Yatra, has a special place in history and religion. The word “dvar,” which means “doors or gates” in Sanskrit, is where the name “Dwarka” comes from. This city was part of the original kingdom of Dwarka, which was set up by Lord Krishna. After he went to heaven, the sea covered it up.
In the past, Dwarka was called Swaravati or Kushasthali, and it was an essential kingdom. Lord Jagannath, who is thought of as a form of Lord Krishna, is honored at the Dwarkadheesh temple. For people who follow Krishna, this makes Dwarka a very holy place.
- Rameshwaram Temple is a special temple in Tamil Nadu, India. It’s dedicated to Lord Shiva and is one of the 12 Jyotirlinga temples. According to Hindu mythology, this temple is where Lord Rama, a manifestation of Lord Vishnu, prayed to Lord Shiva for forgiveness as he killed Ravana, again a devotee of Lord Shiva, who was also the king of Lanka.
An interesting thing about the Char Dham Yatra is the belief that Lord Vishnu performs different activities at each of the four Dhams: He bathes at Rameshwaram, eats at Puri, meditates at Badrinath, and rests at Dwarka.
