The Gangotri Dham or the temple is located in the heart of the Gangotri Town. On the banks of the sparkling and gushing water of the Bhagirathi River, this temple is standing and complementing the overall scenic beauty.
The Sanctum is built with the architecture of Nagara Style, embraced with white granite that goes well with the beauty of the greater Himalayan mountains. In the surroundings, the temple is nestled between the lofty deodar and pine trees enhancing its Charm.
According to the Hindu Mythology, it is linked with the story of Pandava. After achieving Victory in the Mahabharata war, the Five Pandavas performed a Yagna in the Sanctum of the temple for redemption.
About the Gangotri Glacier and Gaumukh:
In the Uttarkashi District of the Uttarakhand state, Gangotri is a small town, popular as the origin place of the River Ganga. When you move forward then Gangotri Glacier and Gaumukh is a 2-day trek. Devout Hindus often set out on this holy expedition. It is believed that bathing in the freezing stream of the river Ganga is very pious and performs as a boon. Bhagirathi, a major tributary of the Ganges originates from the Gaumukh Glacier which later, in the confluence with Alaknanda forms Ganga.
Gaumukh is formed with the combination of two words, (Gau: Cow, Mukh: face). It is the base of the Gangotri Glacier, and the Bhagirathi River starts flowing from there. The Gaumukh is heightened at 13,200ft and is a very rough and tough trek. However, the devotees overcome this difficult expedition with great devotion and adventurous enthusiasm.
You can guess the Importance of the Ganga River among Hindus by this. Hindu devotees always designate the river Ganga as a God and Mother. As stated in several religious Scriptures and textbooks of Hinduism, the River Ganga brings many Healing properties with her. Hindus believe that having one deep dive into the river can make a person rid of his lifetime sins. The holy bath in the river rinses all the negative and impure energies of a person.
People belonging to the oldest religion of Hinduism referred to her as the Maa Ganga, which expresses their great staunchness towards her. Besides, The River Ganga is also symbolised as the Goddess of Forgiveness, sanctification, redemption and atonement. Almost all of the Hindus store the pious Ganga jal in their houses to avoid any bad energies and trouble. They often clean their residence with it, which makes the domestic environment purified and calm.
